"Tile, the Createst Labor-Saving Machine of the Age." To the Editor of The Chicago Tribune. Dwight, III., March 16.- One of the strongest and most convincing facts that I have yet Been with regard to tile drainage is brought out in the December report of the Agricultura! Department of Illinois. It is this: ACEEAGK. Acreage in corn in Livingston County, 1881 268,597 Acreage in corn in Logan County, 18S1. . 140,859 Livingston over Logan Í 27,738 YIELD. Yield of corn in Livingston County.1881. .0,983.522 Yleld of cem4n Logan Couuty, 1882 5,070,921 Livingston over Logan 1,902,598 In other words. Logan County has raised nearly as mueh corn on 140,859 acres as Livingston county has on 268,597 acres. Put it in another form, the farmers in Livingston County have been obliged to plöw nearly doublé the acreage of land (368,697), and have raised but a very small percentage of increase of corn ver their brethern in Logan County, who only had to plow 140,809 acres. Let us givo it another twist! A A farmer who lias his land well tilled need only work eighty acres of land and grow just about as mueh corn as tlie man who plows 160 and takes all the risks of drouth and inuch besides. It is not fair, then, to conclude that the greatest labor-saving machine to-day of the age is the tiledrain? From the same source of informal ion I gather the following as rtgards tlie progress of tile-drainage in these two counties: Fot. Total number of feet laid in Livingston County upto 181 , .1,140,793 Total number of feet laid in Logan County upto 1881 3,989,469 Tliis table proves beyond all theory that owlng to the free use of tile that one county has been able to produce nearly as mueh corn on 140.000 acres of land as another county has produced upon 26S, 000 acres, which is nearly doublé, and the beauty of the whole is that it was done wil h half the work! Mr. Editor, suppose a kind Providence should lengthen out the spin of our daya until we saw Illinois tnoroughly tile-drained, where would be put the corn that this State would produce, and what would we do with our "silver dollars?" Samuel T. K. 1'rime. JACKSON FIRE CLAY CO. Manufacturera of .Stone Sewer Pips - AND - DIRk-IHSr TILE. All our Drain Tilo are made of Fire Clay, are of umwual strength and liyhL uvight, which ma terially reduces the breakage and expense of transportaron. The dltohlng for thisclass of tilingislessexpen sive, as they do not require to be laid belowfrost, but only deep enough to escape the plow. Whilè this is moro econorHica! it also aids in obtainingja better "fall" or grade to the drain.
