The Michigan Normal School

The state board of education yesterday appointed the Hon. Edwin Willits principal of the State Normal school, the appointment to take effect at the opening of the next school year. Mr. Willits is best known to the people of the state in connection with his political career, but he has had large experience in educational matters. He graduated at Michigan university, and was afterwards piiucipal of the Monroe academy, which was the successor to ene of the branches of the university. He was also at oue time principal of the Adrián high school. He was for 12 years a member of the state board of education, and for 16 or 20 years the leading member of the Monroe city board of education. In the constitucional commission of 1873 he was chairman of the committee on education. His studies have been thorough in the direction of metaphysics, history and political econcmy. In making the appointment the boan were moved by the consideration tha in the head of a large educational ins titution like the normal school, a fatni iarity with public alïairs should b coupled with the habita and trainin of the scholar.
