Nothing enlivens the general effect of the Christmaa greens more pleasingly than few bright berries. Flowers are often employed, but berries are more appropriate to the seasun. The Holly is the only tree that gives both evergreen leaves and showy berries (save the rarer Yew), but this is found iu only a few places. Large quantities are brought lo eastern eities just before the holidays, the branches with berries selling at a high price. The vine known as Wax-work and Climbing Bittersweet has bright orange pods which open and show a scarlet berry within. ïhis is very useful for decorative purposes ín early winter. The related "Burning bush" or "Waahoo" has pods of similar structure, but dark-pink without. The Black Alder has most brilliant scarlet berries. The Coméis or Dogwoods in their several species have clusters of small berries from nearly white to blue and black. The hops, or fruit of the wild roses may be turned to good account. Though not showy, the bluish berries of fhe Red Cedar raay sometimos be worked in with pleasiug effect. The berries must bu kept cool and where they vvill not shrink; a fruit cellar is the best place. Portland, Oregon, ia to hare a new rolling mili with 3,000,000 capital.
