Capsicum, tho liquid form of c&yenne, haa a aomewhat peculiar uso in that it ia often auccessfully used by habitual drunkarda aa a means of keoping them from going on a apree, satisfying, in a grcat measure the overpoworing thirat for liquor. It is alao .recommended aa a means of alleviating'and preventing soaBickneas, but, liko all other remedies for thig most uncomfortablo of illnosses, it is not infallible. It is also used extensively as a remeay lor maugnant searlatma, especially in the West Indios, whore that diseaue is very prevalent. In tho lattor case it is used as & gargle. Tho active principie of cayenne ia called capsicinp, and so prevalent is íts odor that a half-grain allowcd to stand in a room will set all the occupauts to cougbing or sneezing. This experiment is often practieed by maliciou8 urchins, who burn red pepper on stoves or put it into f uruaces in order to break up dancos or assembhes of a less frivolous nature. Fortunately, the knowledge of thi8 property of capsicum is coufined exelusively to the country, where ita capaoity as a meani to practical jokes is carefully studiod.
