In population nnd manuiactories it almost equals Philadelpliia, and for wet surpassns any American city, largo or small, with wtucli i am acquainled. - The people are busy, thrlity, industrious. and exceedino;iy polito, imensely national, but absolutely ignorant and indifferent about America and American affairs. I have not met any person so ignoi-ant as the Itaüan count who asked whether it was not dansrerous to venture oulsido of New York on account of the Indians, but they do not seem to know or care that in the vicinity of the noble city of Towson there is a populous and thriving villaje calld Baltimore. - Cor. Theso lands aro boing sold at auction to the highest bidder, under cortain restrictions, and $4,500,000 is now investcd in United S ates bonds and other securitios, tlio interest upon which is annually applied to sustainthe schools. About 25,000,000 acres of school lands remain unsold, and are rapidly increasing in value. The State will havo a permanent school fund of from $76 - 000.000 to $100,000,000, and the universities will hare from $3,000,000 to $5,000,000 each when the land are eold.
