The cumulativo power of money is a [act vory generally known, butnot generally apprcciated. Therearo few men living at tho age of 75, hanging on to existenco by sorne slender enjoymcnt, or ponsioubrs, it may be, on the bounty of kindred or friends, but might, by exercising the smallest partiólo of thrift, rigidly adhered to in tho past, havo set n-side a respeclablo sum which would materially help them to maintain thoir indopendenco in thcir old ag9. Let us :ake the small and insignific:int sum of 5 cents, which we daily pay to have our aoots blackod, to rlde in a car the distance we are ablo to walk, or to procure a bad cigar we are better without, and seo what its value is in the courso oi years. We will suppose a boy of 15, Ly blacking his own boots, or saving lis car-fare, or going wilhout-liis chershed cigarette, puts by 5 cents a day; n ono year he savcs $18,35, which béng banked bears interest at tho rato of per cent, per annum, compounded }i-yearly. On this basis, wnen our .hrifty youth reaohes the ago of 65, iaving set his 5 cents per day religously asido during ijfty years, tho result is surprising. He haa accumulated no less a sum than $8,893.17. A fctutiny of the progress of this result s imcrcsting. At the age of 30 our hero had $495; at 40, $877; at 50, $1,667; U 60, $-',y62. After iiïteen yoars savng his annual interest more than equals his original principal, in twcntyfivo years it is more than doublé; in hirty-iive years it is four times as much; in forty-fivo years it is oight imes as much, and the last year's inorest is $86, or ten and a half times as nuch as iho annual amount ho puts by. The actual cash amount savod in lifty ears is $912.50, the difference between that and iho trrand total of $3,896.17 - ris., $2,98J.67, is accumulated interest.
