The charge of Judge Branham, of Georgia, to the grand jury was ■ ingly forcible. In regard to breaking up the practice of carrying concealed i weapons, he ga vean illustration that came under liis observation while a practieing attorney in Rome in this j State. He liad aclerk in his office who was in the habit of carrying a j ger pistol in each of his vest pockets. This he tried to pursuadetheclerknot to do, but he was persistent in his purpose. A cliënt made a remarle to the clerk after he (Branhan) had lost hls case that he made no effort to do his duty in the matter. On accosting the cliënt about it he denied making the stntempntThe clerk and the cliënt and Judge Branham all met in the law offiVp, when the clerk wanted to know of the cliënt ifhe denied making the aforesaid remark. The cliënt emphatically ', nied it, when the clerk, who was seated at a table, writing, looked up and simply remarked: "Well, you lied; ' that's all." The cliënt, a large, i cular fellow, picked up the tongs and was intending to brainthe clerk, when ] the aforesaid clerk placed his fingers in his vest pocket and pulled out a ' derringer, and, without getting up i from his seat, rested his hand on the ■ table and exclaimed: "You put down j those tongs!" The man very prudently put down I the tongs. When he had left the clerk : said to Judge Branham: "Tfou have , always insisted that I should not ■ ry a pistol, as I would have no need of it. Now, suppose that I had not : had that weapon, that fellow would havu killed me with those tongs." "Not at all probable," replied Judge ; Branham. "Why?" interrógate the surprised clerk. "Because," replied : Judge Branham, "if you liad been . without a pistol you would not have [ called the fellow aliar." This was n. revelation to the clerk, and he doned the practico of carrying cealed weapons. - Atlanta tion.
