There was a large attendance at the democratie couuty convention, held at the court house in this oity Wednesday. Chairman Manly of the county committee, called the oonvention to order, and on inotion of Jno. J. Robison, Michael J. Lehmann of Chelsea, was unanimoualy made temporary chairman. Mr. Lehmann returned thanks fur the honor paid him, in a brief speech. Mr. Robison was eleoted seoretary. The following committee on credentials was appointed: Jas. Li. Stone, Ann Arbor, Jas. L. Gorman, Lyndon, and F. P. BogiinhiH, Ypsilanti. The following gentlemen were appointed on permanent organization and order of business: Jacob Knapp of Bridgewater, Isaac Crawford of Ann Arbor, and F. J. Swayne of Ypsilanti. A reces was taken until half - past on e o'clock. AFTEItNOON SE88I0N. Upon re-assembhng the report of the committee on credentials was read. The report of chairman Knapp of the oommittee on permanent organization, that the temporary officers be made permanent, was adopted. That portion of oommittee's report whicli recommended llmti the convention eleot 18 delegates to the senatorial convention yet to be called, was voted down by a large majority. The regular order of busines was suspended when Hon. C. S. Gregory of Dexter, offered the following: "The democraoy of the oounty of Washtenaw in convention assembled greet their brothers in the second congreasional district, and while deplonng the fact tuat during neither our State nor colonial existence has ït been the fjoou ion une ot mu damooruov ' 'iih county to be honored ïtli a member of ""trroHB. still w deern it a privilege peculiarly onr own in thecontention now at hand to enlute you with a promise of a splendid majority on behalf of just government and democratie rule, and while we extend to the candidate of the con vontion that is to come, whomsoever he may be, our pledge of fldelity and gratef ui assuranoes ofa Hplondid victory, we yet demand the jut claims of the democracy of tbis county fcO a Ctillvliilrtto #rom niuun ifcn mnuy (1ÍHtinguished citizens shall now le justly and fairly considered; therefore be it Resolved, That the delegation this day appointed to the congressional convention do cast the vote of this county as a unit. That the best endeavors of said delegation be put forth and all honorable efforts made to secure the nomination as a candidate for congress of our distinguished fellow citizen and that eminent demoorat, Hon. Charles R. Whitman. Jas. 8. Gorman of Lyndon, moved as ii substituto that, as there were two candidatos for the congrecsional nomination from Washtenaw county, that the oonvention proceed by ballot to determine which candidate should be suported in the oongressional convention. The vote was as follows: C. H. Riohmond, 28; C. R. Whitman, 66. On motion of D. Cramer the resol ution of Mr. Gregory was accepted and adopted. The convnntion then poceeded to elect D. Cramer and Isaac Crawford, both of this city, delegates-at-large to the state oonvention, and C. H. Manly and E. B. Norris delegutes-at-lurge to the congressional convention. The following delégate were then elected to the state oonvention : J. L. Stone, Wm. Arnold, J. V. N. Gregory, J. J. Robison, T. J. McKune, A. Kearney, J. Ryan, Fred. Fitzsimmons, D. Kearney, M. Brenner, C. R Whitman, A. Davenport, E. P. Haiper, F. J. Swayne, Wm. B. Osburn, F. P. Bogardus, J. W. Bab bitt, H. M. Russell. To the oongrefsional convention: J. W. Nanry, M. J. Lehman, M. Duffy, P. Fleming, Jas. 8. Gorman.B. F. Watts, P. Iignen, W. J. Miller, H. E. Bower, J. W Babbitt, M. D. Case, W. H. Lowden, Jacob Knapp, Jno. Spafford, C. F. Ashley, F. J. Swayne, M. J . Kelsey, S. Merrithew. The resignation of C. H.' Manly as chairman of the county committee was accepted, and Jacob F. Schuh was unaninously elected to the position. Thomas J.Kearney was elected secret ry to fill he vacanoy caused by the resignation of Wm. G. Dotv. The following resolutión, offered by kir. Gorman, was adopted: Resolved, That that the thanksof the demooraoy of Washtsoaw county are due and ars hereby tendered to our repreentative in congress, N. B. Eldredge, ind that in our opinión he has shown ïimself, by his vote to restore millions of acres of land to the public domain, .nd by his record in congress a flrm riend of the people. The resolutiou was adopted. Mr. Whitman being oalled, this gen;leman responded and addressed the convention briefly. He expressed himself as highly pleased with the kind reotgnition he had received at the hands of he democracy of Washtenaw county. At the close of his remirks the conrention adjourned. Capt.
