Prof. C. N. Jones was in Detroit over Sunday. W. P. Harris'spent Saturday and Sun day at his home in Detroit. The two sons of the late Pres. Garfleld are studing law in New York. Miss Britten ave a social, Saturday evening, to the freshman class. B. N. Dickman '86 has accepted a position in a laboratory at Joliet, 111. The law school has 13 professors and 336 studeuts, 162 seniors and 174 juniors. E. L. McAllaster, '88 has left college to accept a position viith the Detroit drydock company. The senior Pharmics have appointed oonimittees to see about class photographs and pins. The address delivered by Prof. Kent on Washington's birthday is to be printed in patnphlet form. The Oraole will be out about the 15th. of this month. It is expected to be one of the best ever issued. The 150 volumes of old and rare books, bequeathed to the hbrary by Wm. Murphy, have been received. At a special invitation of the legislature the glee club sang at the governor's reoeption Tuesday evening. J . B. Thomas has resigned f rom the Argonaut board and F. S. Arnett has bten appointed in his stead. Prof. John Dewey's new book on Psychology, received a very fiattering critioism in last week's Churchman. A social for the Preshmen of the S. C. A. was, held Saturday evening, at the residence of Miss. C. L. Britten. Mr. Park of the firm of Park, Davis & Co., of Detroit, was in the city Saturday seeing about the lighting of Hobart hall. W. H. Walker, who has been canvassing for the buiding fund of the S. C. A., has retuned to college and may gradúate with '87. Prof. Trueblood has finished his course in elooution in the law school, for this year. The same course will be given nezt year. During lent a etudents' service is held at St Andrew's churoh on Friday evening, at 7.30 local time, and not every evening as has been stated. Pres. Cummings of the Northwestern university at Evanston 111., had a present of $2,500, by the members of the M. E. church, with whioh to take a trip to Europe. The following are the result of the re ligious canvass of the university, completed Maroh 1, 1887: Number of studente. 1,563; returns received, 1,306; pro fessing christians, 805; church niembers, 639; S. O. A„ 329. The Cleveland alumni of Michigan University liold a reunión and banquet in Cleveland duriug the Maroh recesa. The Denver alumni hold their first annual reunión March 25. There are sixty graduates in Denver. The banquet of the northwestern alumni of Sigma Phi f raternity was held in Ohioago last l'riday evening. Messrs. Carter, Hibbard, Mitchell and Parker represented the U. of M. ohapter, and report a very pleasant time. The fire which occurred in the chemioal laboratory last week, will cause the legislature to see the necessity of a vault to store the ohemicals for protection in case of fire, and will now jprobably make the necesary appropriation for auch a building. The junior hop oommittee was so successful tinancially that they held a banquet at Hangsterfer's, Monday evening, which was a most enjoyable spread. The oommittee will have their picture taken, by Gibson, to-morrow, provided a glass of suffioient strength can be seoured. "The Ladies' Battle" will be given by the dramatic club April 15th, with the following caste: CountesB d' Antro val Miss I. B. Winchell ; Leonir la Vallegonlier, Miss Annie Wilson; Le Baron de Montnchard, Geo. W. Whyte ; Henri de Flavignuel, F. W. Mehlhop ; Guatave de Grignou, J. H. Lee. The play is iehearsed every week and everything indicates that it will be a great succeas. The president and fellows of Harvard college have recen tly come i ut o posses sion of a bequest of $ 230,000, which is applicable only for purposes of special astronomical investigations . It is quite likely that a station, somewhere in the southern bemisphere, will be seleoted as being more advantageous for observing the southern stars, whicn have been far less observed than the northern stars . The students' co-operative association, after three years of existence, has disbanded. The students, not recognizing the benefits denved by this society, did not support it, but patronized lonal dealers. There has been considerable feeling among the bookHellers, tlia merchants and the "co ops., ' as the society did not confine itself to dealing in books, and the discontinuing of the aasociation will bc hailed with delight by the business men. Last Saturday the ball club met at the rink for their first praotice, and judging f rom the work done we may look for a more suooessful team than we had last year. There is a great deal of good material in the freahman clan whinh will be very useful. Counting men that can both pitch and caten we have four batteries, who ought to be able to fill the ' pointe in good style. The team will practico in the gymnasium on Tuesday ! and Thursday afternoons and Sacurday mornings uutil the weather permita of outside playing. A dispatch to the Free Press says: Dr. V. C. Vaughan is still experimenting with tyrotoxicon with good resulte. He (ound poison resembling it iu the bulk oysters eaten at tbe Clarkesville donation. He is now endeavoring to trace the origin of the poison, and has reduced it to one of three germs. He is enabled to manufacture it artifioiallyfrom aniline, and has discovered that it has stroag explosivo properties. This disoovery carne near costing the doctor his eyes. He was evaporating a quantity of it by heating, b9nding close over it to watch it. íáome one carne to the door and while he was talking to his visitor, the heat reached the tyrotoxicon, whieh exploded withterrifio foroe,breakmgthe vessel in which it was contained into fragments. Its explosivo forcé is greater than that of gun powder, and the doctor carne near soaring the wits out of a reporter this afternoon by exploding some for him. It explodee by applying heat to it. Tyrotoxicon very quickly decomposes upon exposare to the air. The poison obtained from the aniline is muoh more deadly than the aniline iteelf . The doctor's experiments give promise of valuable resulta. If you want to teaoh a dog arilhmetic, tie up one of his paws, and he will put down three and oarry one every time.
