London Railway Newa. It was stated the other day thatthe Midland Railway Company were building engines to cover the distanee between London and Derby within two hours, but this was manifestlyan error. True, some oL their expresses are timed between certain points at a velocity of fifty miles an hour, but this does not represent tho rato of speed for a continuous long distanco journey, albeit one of the Midland expresses does a run of 70 1-2 miles at the rate of 51 8-4 miles an hour. The 1 ordinary expresa trains of this comi pany between London and Manchester, via Derby, a distance of 191 miles, accomplish the journey in 4 1-2 hours, or at a rate of speed of 45 per hour, and their new express between Í the same points, via Nottingham, Battersley and Ambergate, an In crease in distance of 0 miles, does it in 4 hours 10 minutes; rate of speed, 45 1-2 miles per hour. Tho following is the order of priority, so far as speed is concerned, of three of the great rail1 way companies: Great Northern, I Granthum to King's Cross, 105 1-2 j miles, 1 hour 58 minutes; velocity, ! 53 1-2 miles per hour. Great Western, Paddington to Swindon, 77 1-4 i miles, 1 hour 27 minutes; velocity, ! 53 1-4 miles per hour. Midland, Ket tering to Kentish Town, 70 1-2 miles, 1 liour 22 minutes; velocity, 51 3-4 miles per hour. The Midland Compny thus take third honors. There are twenty universities in Germany. They show a muster-roll of 28,000 pupils. A seventh of these are lectured in the claas-rooms of Berlin.
