Fred Grant, the republican candidato for secretary of Btate, lias been defeated by Cook, south of the Harlem river by at least 05,000 plurality, The boom of the George party vanished iuto thin air. The Gitorge men confldently counted on TU,0 .)() vots in Kew York city: they only pollcd 05,000, and their total vote throughout tbe statu is estimated bolow 60,000. In the great contest for the District Attorneyship in New York City, Col. Fellows the united democracy candidato, is elected by 20,000 plurality, over Nicoll, the republican nominee. Post, the labor candidate, polled 80.000 votes. The George party tooK their defeat gracefully. Henry George made a speech ut bis headquarters in which he toóle a cheerful view of-tbings and predicted ultímate success. In Brooklyn the democrats have carried everything, Chapín, the democratie candidate for mayor, being elected by a handsome majority. The legialature, ho wever, remnins republican, thcre being a republican majority of six in the senate and twenty in the assembly. The total labor vote amounta to about 70,000 and the prohibition vote 40,000. Later returns may, and uudoubtedly will, change the figures somewhat, but not enough to materially efïoct the general rosult. Ohio rollsup big ropublican gnins. Gov. Foraker's majority is estimated at 25,000. Next tq the Empire state Virginia rolls up a solid majority for democracy, Mahone and bis followers suffering a veritable Waterloo. Iowa shows domocr&tic gnins all along the line, and the indications are that the Hawkeye state will havo a democratie governor. In Massachusetts the republicana claim the state by at least 14,000 majority, ü-ot. Ames being elected by a largely increaged majority. The republicans get Pennsylvania by tho usual nnjority, the election in tuis stat being for state troasurer for a term of two years and for a judge of the supremo court to serve twenty-one years. Rhode lsland held a postponed election for representativa to congress. The result shows republican gains. In Chicago and Cook county the republicans carry everything by a aweeping majority. In Maryland democratie state offleera and legislature are elected by bandeóme majorities. In New Jersey the results are somowhat mixed on the legislativo ticket, altboujjh it is probable that the state gains a republican senator. In Mississippi there waa no oppositiou to the democratie ticket, bo a victory is assured there. Nebraska gives solid republican mujorities, although the vote was very light, and there was an unusual amouut of scratching. In Dakota the question was for or against the división of the temtory on the -liiih parallel, and in countiea where an election had been called by Detition to the county commissioners, the question of local option was voted upon. Th Pioneer Press has returns from twenty countio h hich show a generally light vote on the question of división, with tbe probabilit ius that tbe majority in favor thoreof in the whole tertitory will be about 10,000. On the question of hcenso vs. prohibition the counties containing the larger towns like Fargo ond Grand Forks go for licenae, but of the whole vote cast prohibition will probably get a sinnll majority. In Uregon prohibition waa the question at issue, and earlier returns indícate that the prohibition amendment is defeated by 7,(iO0 to tS.COJ majority. In Detroit sucu a democratie victory was never before known, tho demócrata electiug their candidate for mayor by fully 6,000 plurality. The new board of alderman will be strongly democratie, nud only live republicans were elected to th board of eitimatea.
