The third annual banquet of the Michigan Club, which was held in Detroit February 22, equalled, if indeed it did not surpass tlie similar evont of last year and the year before. Senator Palmer acted as master of ceremonies, aml welconied thoguests to the city, Gov. Luce extended a cordial greetmg in the name of the state, and addre.-sjs were delivered by Senator Hawley of Connecticut, Senator Harrison of Indi ana, Representativos McKinley of Ohio, Carraón and Finerty of Illinois, McComas of Maryland, and (ien. Mussekeman of Auburo, Ind., upon the subject oL "Feeding ior Alarket." The writer took the posltion that while a variety of food was essential, corn should be the staple food and foundation of all. Au interesting disoussioii eusued upon the subject and many KOod tboughfes and suggestions brought out. H. Morse of Union City, read a paper. "The Best Age to Wean Pigs and How to Care tor Them Af ter Weaning." Tliis paper contained many good points and suggestions. The discussion which (olio wed the reading was spicy and interesting. John Bowditch of Juf ferson Hillsdale county, followed with a paper upon the "Best Manner of AdvertisinRlinprovedSwine. "and V". H. Darrow of Culd water, one upon the '-Value of Expert Judging." Mr. Darrow would have iudges for each breed oí swine, and oply thoso who were períectly familiar with all tue peculiarities and ebaructeristics of the breed as well as well as with their good qualities and defect?. In the hands 01 sm-ii judges justico would be done, and an incentive giveu to keep the Standard high. The asBOciation passed a resolution that its meiuuers would not exhibit at fairs where expert judges where not enijployed. They also passed resolutions askiug the Hillsdale county agricultura! society to appoint expert juuges ut the fair tbis year. A. 11., to present to each delegato a souvenir of the occasion. Charles T. Koster Post of Lausing, bas adopted one for the coming -March encampment which will be the linest thing of the kind ever presented in this state, lt will be a broaze raed al about the siza of a sil ver half dollar, on the front of which will be, in bas relief, the head of Uepartinent Comniander Rutherford; also on this side, in a circle, will be inscribed in raised letters, "1 G. Rutherford, De partnient Commander. " On the reverse side it will read: "Tonth Annual Encampment Department of Michigan G. A. H-. Lansing, ISbS. " The medal will be suslended by a ribbon of the department color (crimson) trom a bronze pin-bar one and a half inches long and flve-sixteenths of an inch wide, across the center of which will bc a bronze U. A. R., badgo of the sizo and similar to the O. A. I!.. button usually worn on the lapel. The souvenir is being inanufactured at the United States mint in Philadelphia at an expense of ï'Mj. State League Organized. A Republican State League was organized in Detroit February 22. CoL John Atkinson was chosen president, with a vice-president trom eauh county. The president was authorized to select the secretary of the committee at his conven ience and Joseph B. Moore was made treasurer of the committee. It was declded to havo the temporary headquarters of the committee at the Michigan Ciub rooms. J. S. Estabrook of Sagina w, U. K. Loyell of Geuesee, and J. T. liich of Lapeer, were made a finance committee. The committee concluded to combine with the state central committee, if convenient. Murdcr in Newaygo. Wenzel Matzka, a Frenen cook at Ryerson & liall'.s camp, three miles north of Newaygo, iatally stabbed John PuLf, a fellow employé. PufE was plaguing Matzka. Pull died the next mornlng and Matzka is in jail. Putf leaves a widow and three children.
