While a performance was in progress at the Banquot theatre in Oporto, Portugal, an explosión of gas occurred and the theatre took fire and was destioyed. The house was f uil of spectators and anumber of livj-i were lo-t. Many persons were injured. Eighty bodies have been taken from the ruins. Most of those burned wero in the third hoxes and galleries, whero hole amilios wero suffocated. There was a terrific striiggle at the doors when tho spectators tried to escape. Largo numbrrs wero sull'ocated and trampled on. Vany on reachimir the street were so seriously injured tliat tliey vomited lilood. Nearly all the victim-i were spectators. The actors escaped in their theatrical costumes. Many in the theater findingthem selves unable to reach the doors, jumped from the windows.
