Grand Rápida tkis week seemd to be unanimouB for Alger. Michigan is supposed to be for Alger first, and laat, and uil the time, and so the oonvention made no open expression for second choice. But Blaine is undoubtedly the man, and all the delegates seleoted are Blaine men. R. G. Peters of Manistee, n very wealthy and liberal republican, who otherwise wonld have been one of the ürst delegatea selected, was beatan because it was suspeoted that he was oppo&d to Blaino. R. E. Fraser - our own whilom democratie Bob who was first attraeted to the party of " great moral ideas " after the war, after all the moral questions growing out of slavery were settled, after reconstruction, and after he had giren the greenback party a trial - our own roaring democratie Bob who has canvassed Washttinaw county for the " Copperheada " ao many times, who has so of ten exerted his windy sloquence in abuse of " niggere," heads the republican delegation of Michigan in a national convention ! Ye Gods ! what will the abades of Zach Chandler and Wm. A. Howard say to this? We are glad to notice that our townsman, Joe T. Jacobs, bas been choaen a member of the republican state central committes. Joe is a "hustler" and will make an active, and reliable man on the committee. He gave the democracy of Washtenaw a hard rub as the republican candidato for the senate a few years ago. The republicans are evidcntly preparing for an active and aggressive campaign. They mean business. They evidcntly realize that if they are beaten this time the " jig is up " with them. Aid the signa in dicate a growing boom for Alger. Tüe oíd soldiers aro quistly moving in the matter. Several assooiations of veterans have expressed themselvos for Alger, and an eíTort will be made to make hun the soldiors' candidato. There are no flaws in hia record. Hia nomination can arouse no jealousies or factional opposition in the republican party. The Democbat believes that he is the strongest and most dangeroua man for the democracy tlut the republicana can nomínate. The city fathers aro begianing to realize that they have not an unhmited amount of money to spond this year. They have decided very wisely not to enter upon the job of cutting down North Main street, now in excellent order, to the serious and laBting injury of all the propsrty on the east side of it, and without substantial advantage to the property on the west side . It has long been the idea with the common counoil that whenever a cellar is dug the city must take the dirt and pile it into the middle of our streets. The rceult has been our streets have been seriously injured and many of them to-day are higher than the lot on either side. The only streots in the city whicli are in bad order, and a nuisance to-day are the streets where dirt has been carted on this spring. If the school board, the christian associatiou, or any private parties are going to dig cellars this summer it is to be hoped that our common council will let them dump the dirt into the cat hole instead of piling it into the atreets at the expense of the taxpayers and to the sarious injury of the streets themsolves. This council has a fine chance and a good excuse if it wants one to make a reputation for economy and common sense. lts motto should be : "2ío more cellars emptied on the ítreets." If it is done or attempted to be done, the property holders along the line of the streets about to be injured ahould combine and end the nuieance by injunction.
