Archbishop Ireland has declared in no uncertain terms against the Chicago platform and candidates. He says that, as a citizen of the United States, concerned in all the interests of the nation, subject to all the responsibilities of citizenship, he cannot remain silent when the country is passing through a crisis which involves the integrity of the nation, the prosperity of the people and the permanency of f ree institutions He warns the people against the heresies proclaimed by Mr. Bryan and his followers. He says he does not speak as a religious teacher, but entirely as a citizen without warrant from his church. Archbishop Ireland stands by the Iiepublican platform and the candidate of the Republican convention at St. Louis. He thinks that the question of f ree and unlimited coinage of 8ilver is of but minor importanee compared with the other great questions which are brought into the campaign. He is satisfled that the f ree and unlimited coinage of silver dollars at the ratio of 16 to 1 by the United States independently, will disturb the business of the country and bring upon it a great financial depression. The popular prelate of St. Paul, does not project his views to the country unsolicited, but formulated his views at the request of a number of distinguished business men of Minnesota Such statements and opinions coming from so highly re spected a source are bound to command wide attention. The Archbishop is confident that the American people will arise in their might and blot out this insult to our great nation. To use his own words- "The great American nation will, as a nation, declare to the world that it will not make a law compelling its creditors to be satisfled with half or a little more of the money they loaned to it, and go on record in the eyes of the world as a broken down, bankrupt, repudiating nation."
