J set ssue of the Detroit Journal a communication 1'roin Ann Arbor, and also in last week's issue of the Ann Arbor Courier, that I am quoted as loaning moneyon ni oever loaned a cent on a mortaor have I ever taken any mortgage of any kind with a gold clause inserted therein. Some weeks ago, one J. II. Ma life Lnsurance vender, met me at the entrance to iny office and asked me il1 I ■ if any one who had moneyto can. 1 told him I l; that one of my neighbors had some money whicl desired to loan, and Mr. Mays then said that he had issueu a 2.000 poüoy of insurance on theli y here in town, remium on whic '120; that the lady wanted to get that amount and some more to pay up a sma on her prem and also to payfor au addition which she was putting on her house; that he was trying to get the money from the New York Life Insurance people, but that itwould take too long and then he was not sure he could get'ife bed me to go and see the property with him, whieh I did, and I [uested that the lady who had the money be shown the premises, She lown the premises and arrangements were or the loan 'thfough Mr. Mays. It seems ( that the lady ]fe Mr. Mays had insured, waa told by Iiira that lie eould not get her the money, unless tl.e gold clause was_ inserí cd. My connection with the transactioa was simply to inform Mr. Mays where )kj eotíld obtain tlie money, and draw up the papera for the parties after they had agreed upon the terins of the transactioa through Mr. Mays. And I was surprised to learn that Mr. Mays had so far íorgotten the ordinary courtnsies of business intercourse aa to try and cover a wenk argument with a false representaron of á business transaetion. I wish to s iv to the public that if I had money to loan. I would have no hesitancy in doing so, without exactiég its repayment in a metal whieh all authoi'ities adrnit is coristantly appreciating in vakie. M. J. Cavaxaugh. Here are statements oí the parties to the transaetion. It pays to teil the truth. Ann Arbor, Mich., Oct, 26, If Iloaned of Mrs. K. M. Sill througb Mr. Mays some money, and the tenns rere agreed apon through him. lie said he would get the money trom thelíew York Life Insurance company, ►und out after that he eould not; 1 did not loan any money from Mr. Cavanaugh, nor did" he have any! to do with the gold clause. It Mrs. Siil who wanted ït. N o eonversation was liad about a gold cla wherein Mr. Cavanaugh was interested. Aii. ut to the contrary is untrue. üi this money I paid Mr. Mays -Sril.li premium on a policy of $2,000. Mes. S. A. Caeson. Ann Arbor Mich., Oct. 26, I 1 loaned Mrs. Francia Carson 1,000 and tlie moi.tgage was drawn at my dictation, after the terms had been I upcm. Mr. Cavanaugh had nothing to do with the terms of the laan and any st itement to the c is false.
