New York, March 10. - Fire broke out Tuesday afternoonin a five story apartment building at Cantón street and Auburn place, Brooklyn. It was first discovered in the elevator shaft. Mrs. Clara Doddard, who occupied the top fioor, became panic-strickenat the sight of the ñames and threw her 8-monthsold baby out of the window. The littlo one's brains were dashed out on the pavement, and the mother, when she had realized what she had done, jumped out of the window also, breaking one of her legs and sustaining several other injuries. The body of Charles Doddard was subsequently found by the firemen on the top floor of the building. He was smothered by the smoke. Doddard's wife, who jumped from the fifth floor after throwing her infant from the window, is in a precarious condition. A Mrs. Duncan who dropped from the third floor window in attempting to escape, is suffering from a fractured skull. Bradley Appoints AVood Senator. Frankfort, Ky„ March 6. - Governor Bradley Friday announced the appointment of Major A. T. Wood of Mount Sterling, Ky., to succeed J. C. S. Blackburn as United States senator. "VVith the appointment was also given out the cali for an extra session of the legislature to convene March 13, the election of a senator being one of the objects named. Mr. Wood has been a Republican leader in Kentucky for many years and made the race for governor against John Young Brown in 1890. Ex-Senator Dolph's Leg Amputated, Portland, Or., March 10. - Ex-Senator John Dolph Monday had his left leg amputated just above the knee and now lies in a very critical condition. It is feared he will not survive the shock of the operation. A few days ago a sore appeared on Mr. Dolph's leg and it soon became troublesome and the physicians decided it was a case of uric acid poisoning and that the only hope for his recovery was through amputation. Freiioh Occupy an African Tmvn, Brass, África, March 10. - News which recently reached here that a French force numbering 400 men, under white officers, was occupying the town of Boussa, has been conflrmed. The officials of the British Niger company are considering the question of repelling by force this incursión into territory which has long been recognized as being within the British sphere. Two Years for Captain Hart. Philadelphia, March 9. - Captain John D. Hart, owner of the filibuster Laurada, was sentenced in the United States district court at 10:35 Monday morning to two years' imprisonment, to pay a fine of $500 and the costs of the prosecution.
