Leavenworyi, Kas., June 12. - Joseph W. Oliver, a dishonorably discharged soldier from the Soldiers' home here, is under arrest suspected of an attempt to kill Governor Andrew J. Smith and his wife and daughter. Yesterday their home was nearly wreeked by dynamite exploded by some miscreant with tha evident intent to kill the whole famil;-. Oliver is a tough character, and a fev.' months ago was arrested and punished for deliberately shooting into an electric car. A few nights ago John Biringer's powder magazine was robbed, and it Is Í believed the robber is the one who caused the explosión. Many friends of Governor Smith ar.cl his family in this city went to the home to offer assistance, and the authoritles are active in their efforts to hunt down j the perpetrators. It is the universal t opinión that the outrage is a direct i sult of the persecution waged against Governor Smilh for the past flve or six years by certain persons in Leavenworth and elsewhere in Kansas. Threats to blow up the governor have been freely made by discharged veterans since the national board of managers made the order transferring Colanel Smith to j Santa Monica, Cal.
