Republicans explain the defeat of the Repnblican ticket in Cincinnati cm the ground that the bossism of George Cox had becozne intolerable. No doubt that had sowething to do with it, but Cox bossism did uot carry Detroit for the Dcmocrats or elect a Democratie mayor iu President MoKinley'a owu towu of Cantou or secure a reversal of the popular verdict iu rnany of the cities aud towns of Ohio and Michigan, Illiuois aud New Jersey. Democratie majorities in that section of the country have peculiar siguificauce. Iu their ligbt Republicau assertions that the Democratie party is wrecked are sicklied o'er with a palé cast of fear. Iu view of the excesses of discriminating taxatiou aud the riot of Repubhcan loot beginuing in Washington, they have special timeliness. These returns frorn the parts of the couutry where Hauua did some of his fiuest work, and which were held up as the strougholds of Republicanism iu the west, convey a warning to the domiuaut powers in Washington. They shake the foundations of Republicau confidence aud arrogance and prove that the victory of the syndicated monopolies was merely temporary, and that the Democracy has vigorous life and will be the instrumeut of popular rebuke should the admiuistratiou cast reason and justice tothewinds. - St. Louis Republic.
