London, July 13.- The strike oí engineers is apparently to be a long and fierce struggle, to be settled ouly on the basis of the survival of the fittest. Both the rnasters and the men have refused alï offers of arbitration, including that of 'C. T. Ritchie, ptvsident of the board of trade. The loekout begau this morning. As a retaliatory measure, the engin-eers are calling om the remainder of the men. and by this evaing no fewer tlwn 100,000 eugineers will be idle. Already the yai'ls of severa I Iarge flrms have been picketed. The Ixmdon firms that have oined in the lockout uow number 40. Among them are suei important concerns as the Otis E'.evator Co., üw Weetiughoiise Brake Co., Frazer & Chalmers aad the Brush Electric Engineering Co.
