To tlie Editor: Is it not somewhat siirprising that ïv.inisters in these enlightened times continue the practice of belittliug women ia their churehes - especially .' ■■ s! it is largrely by their efforts that . . ■ .mrhes are supported? Only Sunday a minister in this. city referred to thera as "the lazy women of today," and as I loakï over that Farge audienee roorn aml snv tbose wel] dressed women with their i.iily c-hiidren, I wondered wlu-re the lazmess was manifest; and I fnrthet wondered1 where thy husbands and fathers of those "lazy women" and childreu might be, foï I took eognizmre of the fact that nine-tenlhs of the congregation wcre women, who mcekly saf and listened to the sentiment, tltóit women are unablo to keep to a point that may chance to be uuder discussion. Possfbly women who thus sit and listen to such things think they are following strictly the Bible injuncUon of Cor. li and 34. It remimls one forcefully of the la-dies of tlie cliurch society who had raised means to give a poor young man in the-Jr ehiTPCh a theological education. Tliey sncceeded. He returned, and the following Sabbath repaid their kindiu ss by preaehing to them from the verse above cited, viz.: "Iet your women keep silence in the churches; for it is uot ■permitted unto them to speak; lint thoy are eommanded to be under obedien-ce, as also saith the law." Are such relies of banbarism to ren'.ain, blots upou our boasted America eivilization and freedom, wit'h no v.ord of protest from those most tally interested?
