The school board held its flrst meeting öf the new school year in Sopt. Perry'S office Tuesday nigM. TIn tc was a full attendance and the ncw nn-mber of the board, Mr. E. F. Mills as present receiving congratulations u:d giving'. everybody the glad ia ml. After transacting some general business, the board proceeded to elect offlcers by informal ballot. For the office of president tuere were two eaadidates, Mrs. Anna B. Bach and Dr. Srolth. On the second ballot Mrs. Baeh was elected by a vote of 5 to 4. For the remalnlng offices there were no contests and the balloting resalted as follows: Seeretary, E. F. Mills; treasurer, J. E. Beal; trnant otti ■ r. Martin Clark. In resigning the chair to the intoming president, Mr. Jacobs thanfeed the board for their kindness and forbe-araüce during his term as president. Mrs. Bach was visibly affected when Bhe rose to thank the board for the honor imposed upon her, but made a neat little speech of acceptance nevertheless. A request was received from the truaut officer asking that his salary hi Taised to $150 beeause of an mcrease in the duties devolving upou him. He was oidered to present d detailed report of time spent in tUe performance of his duties. Miss Bower moved that the census enumerator be paid ?100 for her services. This motion provoked a discussion on the subject of raising salaries. Mr. Beal said that last yeaï everyibody who asked for one got a raise, and toe believed that witli an overdraft of sonie $6,000 this raising business should" be Sropped. He t'iought the eensus taker did very good work this year and was in favor of irakiug up ?25 among the trasteos and ordering the treasurer to pay only S7.". for the work of enu.iuM-aiion, the same amount as has bean paid bef ore last year. Mr. Jacobs supportea inis view of the case, but Miss Bower thought the gentlemen were uot taïking to the point and the $100 ought to be paid without any paiieying. Mr. Scott spoke in favor of the per capita method of takmg the census but thought the $100 was Jue this year. The matter was put to vote aud carried. So the money will l)e paid although the gentlemen present all said tliat the raise last year had been made in a moment of weaknes. Then Dr. Smith wanted to move that the amouQt next year be $75 and no moTe; but he was Indwced towithdraw his motlon as some of those present thought it wouldn't look vcry uice to have the motion on record Just after aüowing $100 for the work.
