It is usuülly conceded thai tarlíÉ duties levied upon articles which a country exports but does not import are inoperative. The United States has a large surplus of agricultura] producís each year which must tind a üiarket abroad. Henee it is reasonable to presume that dutles upon agricultura] producta are mere empty phrases, calculated to entertain the gullible. But our farmers are told that they are to be protected from cheap Canadian producís. Just how farm produc be raised cheaper on une side i the national boundary than it can upon the other does not appear, so long as lands and labor are as liigh upon one fade as upon the other. And as a mat! fact this conflition does appear onlj in the "hocus pocus" which is used to support the tariff delusion. The Michigan fftrmcr w boring under the hallucination thal !u; i.s behefited in thls particular by the Dingley tariff, can be completely eüred by a perusal of the markel repBrts which are published each week in all Canadian weekly newspapers. Farm produce of every kind and character s as high upon one side of the Detroit river as it is upon the other, ar.d all statements to the contrary are simply pleas to the ignorant and unthinking. '
