The Democrat will give the followir.g cash jiis lo ihe school children of VVusiiLenaw county Lor historical essays, to be exhibited school day at the VVashtenaw county fair of 1898. All essays must be upon some topic relating to the early history of the school district of which the competitor is a resident. It is the design of these prlzes to bring out hicherto unpublished reminiscences of early life in Washtenaw county and the originality oL the narrative, as well as the merlts of the ünglish composition. will be considered by the committee in making the awards. All enlrys must be made in the regular way with the fair authorities. For children of country schools of Washtenaw county for best essay oonforming to above conditions, $3; for second best, $2. These special school prizes are offered thus early that teachers and scholars raay avail themselves of the opportunity to compete for thern and perfect their work before the close of the current year, as there is not sufflclent time between.the opening of the schools in the fall and the daie of the fair to insure good work and general competition.
