Dr. Palmer, of Brooklyn, Mich., a raduate of the U. of M., who was with he Thirty-third Michigan at the terible battle of Santiago, spoke enterainingly to a Detroit Tribune reporter n regard to the awful carr.age. Said e: "The wonder is that our entire regiment was not cut to pieces. We were rdered to Aguadores to distract the nemy's attention from. the main atack. After leaving the train, our men ound themselvea between the ocean on ne side and a wall of perpendicular ock on the other. A few bushes growng at the water's edge furnished our only protection. Concealed behind the rocks, the Spaniards picked out our men whenever they showed themselves. To fire ín return was not only fruitless, but hopeless folly, the smoke from o'T Springfields betraying our presence to the enemy, while their sivckeless ammunition effectively concealed their whereabouts. "Gen. Duffleld and his men did all that could be asked of them and more. The crossing of the railroad bridge, the failure to accomplish which has been unfavorably commented upon, wat. physically impossible. The bridge was not there to cross. It had been destroyed long before. The ritr was 1,600 feet wide and very deep. To ford ït was impossible. "The men held the position from 10 until 4 o'clock. The Spaniards secured a machine gun mounted on a hand car I and started shelling our Unes. The shells escaDed the flrst battalion in puB puooas au) Suoute n3ï Pu Viojj third, bringing up the rear. What damage they would have wrought it would be difficult to state, had not a small gunboat from Admiral Sampson's fleet come to our reseue, and by driving the Spaniards given us a chance to retire. Palmer had the good fortune to dress the wounds of one of the Spanish offlcers taken prisoner, who was afterwards exchanged for one of Hobson's party. Though unable to express his thanka in English, the Spar.iard showed his ap preciation by tendering Palmer a Spanish gold coin, which has been sent as a souvenir to a young lady in Ann Arbor.
