Although the public is not hearing a great deal about it these days, theelectric railroad project is by no means dead; in fact, the chances of its being built are about equal with Pingree's chances for being elected governor of Michigan. The Leader had a few ïnoments conversation with Director Birkett, Tuesday, and learned the status of the ca&e to be about as follows: Mr. Birkett last week received word from President Mapes that the contractor, who was in New York; was coming to Lansing, acoompanied by several New York capitalists, and that they were going to drive over the line from Lansing to Ann Arbor. Mr. Birkett was asked to be ready to accompany them. Owing to some delay, they did not come, however, and Tuesday he received a seeond letter telling him they would be here Thursday (last). ■ The letter explatos that one point that troubles the capitalists is the length of the line. They want to get it under 60 miles. It is now 65 miles and almost as straight a line as the t,f?WKfliuS-" Stl11 Birkett thinks that by buying some right of way it might be shortened a bout 3 miles It may be a good thing for the' people along the line to learn, which is the truth, that the talk of the South Lyon route is something more than wind. -the right of way has been seoured and a survey made by those who are pushing that route and the people along the line are showing much enthusiasm The question of which route will be taken wil! probably be decided by the eastern We hear considerable said about the lack of interest shown in the project by Ann Artor.
