About a year ugo a ir was brought from one of the Territones m u-ons and handüd over to the Detroit House ef Correction with tlie warning that he was a desperate character and had boasted that he woulit " run the institution. He had a malignant look and a surly ansvver to all questions, and when ordered down into the bath-room he boldly declined to go. "Step down!" repeated the depnty. " I woa't!" replied the prisoner, backing off a little and glancir.g arouuU for a weapon. The deputy was the man for the occasion. Walking close up to the prisoner he said, in a quiet bul far-reaching "Every prisoner undev tlus roof must obey me or die! If you are not down-stairs in thirty seconds, I wiU shoot you through the head!" No weapons were in sight. Both men faced each othcr barehanded. llie prisoner was a robber and a muvderer. ïhe deputy was an ollicer of nerve. For ten seeonds they looked into each othcr' s eyes and read each othcr s thonn-hts. Then the prisoner turnea and went down Btairs, and fxoni that day to this he has been as submissive and obedient as any man 'm the priaon.
