Alarm was promptly given but before help arrlved the Sames bad made such headwny that there was no hope of saving the property, it being a wooden structure and easy to succumb to the devouring element. This ppperty built and fumistaed at an experneof about $20,000 Was reduced to ashes ia the short spaceof twohoura. It was owned by Dr. Calvert, whose faniily reside in a dwelling near by and included in the property, and Dr. Gatchell, late a homeopathie professor in the univirsity and who left the city very hastily. It bas proved an nnremunerative investment to every owner. About one year ago the house was leased to one Dr. Russell, who came here withsogood a reputaÜQn f or building up this specie of sanitarium propertv that the owners advanced him $200 to makt' imjrovements, and believed, at least, hoped that it would growinto public favor and be made to yield 8 profit. ïhe new tenant remained, paying no rental, until autumn when lie was forced to leave by the usual legal process, since which time it has been opened on Saturdays and Sundays for bathing purposes by a son of Dr.Cálveri and a medical student. It was soon extinguished. Thedamage from water was greater than fiom fire. Ferguson's loss is within S1U0. and that of the owner of the building, Mr. F. L. Parlier, no greater. Loss covered by insurance. On Wednasday afternoon smoke was observed issuing from the bam of M. Welnman in rear of his market on Washington street. A few pails of water extinguished it. It is not knovra how it came on fire but is thought to have been through earelessness from a pipe or cigar. At eight o"clock on the evening of the same day flre was again discovered in the barn, believed this time to be an incendiary's work. The building one of not much value was considerably damaged. Two horses, wagon and harness were saved. Other contents, hay and straw were burned. Loss about $50, and no insurance. Before the firemen had recovered from tlieir labors at the Weinman conllagration, the bell rang forth another alarm which proved to be the residence of John M. Slater on Spring street. Mr. Slater is the senior partner of the hardware firm of Slater & Graf, and had been making improvements to the building, with the view of moving into it this week. At 7 r. m. he mude a tour of inspection of the premisea returning to bis, place of business. ïwo hours later it was envelopel in flames breaking out in different rooms establishing the fact bevond doubt that the floors had been covered with kerosene by the incendiary. The flames made suclr lieadway before arrival of iire companiea that nothing could be saved. Loss about S1800 with $800 insurance.
