The 'big girls' in a school cali the littlc girls 'ninnies' and the boys of their own a.ife 'little flats,' 'softiea' and 'saphoadi' (all very truc) ; but they claim a right to flirt with the schoolmaster, to be treated as if thoy have rather long dresses on and know a little bit inore than they did last year. They generally stop at the post office on their way home Iroin school and ask for letters which they ncver receive. They are au fait at the soda water fountain, and flirt with the fountain boy, while they are trying for a very loii!í time to decide betvveen nineapple syrup and vanilla. They look askance at coachnien, and then whisper one to anothcr. They stoop a little, so that the eiuU of their dresses may come down to their shoes. They gile, and buy tilly, and chew it with oi)en ïiiouths. At home under the (lomostic kerosene hjfht they are very quiet aud childlike, but in the moiTiing they plaii to pin motto papers to the skirts of tlie teacher1 coat. 'Big girls' at school are silly, buinptious and jolly, and they are at just such au age when their parents can do no more pi-ofltable thing than look them a little through one eyc."
