In 1876 Prof Winchcll fonnd ín and around Littlc Falls, Minnesota, a nntnber of fragmente of wrought quartz in surface deposits underneath the remains of 4,he mound builders. Prof Winoheil, aocordingly, fixod Mio era of the quartz workers betvreen that of the mound builders and the close of the glacial epoch. At a late moet ing of tho IILstovioal Society, at Miinieapolis, Mimi., Francis E. Babbit gave an account of a considerable cleposit ot quartz chips and implements found in regular strata, which must have been formed before the close of the glacial period. The specimens consist of harmners, ünplements, etc, both finished and unfi nished, together with chips truck ofl' iVom the articles in tho procesa of manufacture. The material of "whicli thcy are composed is principally j pact , histrous quartz, frequeutly mottled as if seketud wii-h an eye to llio art is tic beau ly. The strutiuu is somo few iiu'lio8 iu thicknoss, anti lies in the soil a few i'eet below the surface. The appearancea indícate that tliis yraa ouce the site of a mauufactory of such quartz objeots, and this idea is upheld by various oonsideratious. There are tóuls found sucli !us wou ld be ased in the manufacture of quai'lz articles, and the whole stratuni is mixed witli chips, whicli in many cases appear stuck in the dii't just as they foll froni the hand of the uuknown. Unfiuished implements are also found in more or less ad vaneed stayes of manufacture. It is not po8sible to iix the proeise puiut occupiod by these remaius in iho saaie of iho glacial epoeh unt.il tho i drift foatares and surrouuding l'orraations of the locality shall bc botter . uuderstood tlian novr. Still it is cer tain that the rounains beloug to a people living bei'ore the end oí' the last glacial peviod, because tucy ara depositod in a ili-ift vrüich is kuovro to uo ol' glacial origiu. The hard pau upon wliich the quartz fonnatious iie is probably of the flrat glacial psi'iod, anti the quariz may Ijulony to au Luier glacial epocli. A Ponieranian 1 ie u tenant of Lfindwèhi' cavalry, and a 8ilesian student, boih giaiiis in stature and bulk, stalked into Landvogt's restaurant, in Berlín, one at'ternoon in Marcli, aml cal led in stenioriun toues lor respective muga af Pilsener and Muncbeuei' beev. Of the tbaming contenta ot' these ve they soon disposed by tho famoua "coyr-swallow" method. Wnen they oalled lor their bill, sonie three houiy and a half later, it was found that the Pumeranian lieutenanl had absorbed sixty-seven pinta of Pilseaer, whik bis Bilecdan lellow-soaUer had only succeeded in furnishiug accommodalious lor fifty-lour.
