Doubled Up His Assessment
DOUBLED UP HIS ASSESSMENT
AND H. S. HOLMES WILL NOT STAND FOR IT
Attorney Turnbull Says it was Not Legally and Cannot Enforce it
Attorney Turnbull, of Chelsea, was in the city Monday. Said he:
"I notice the papers have stated that H. S. Holmes, of Chelsea, has refused lo pay his taxes and the village is going to sue him. There is a very good reason why he won't pay his taxes. He was assessed last year on $15,000. This year they simply doubled the assessment on him. No report was made to the council, but the figures on the rolls were altered. He would not stand for this and I don't blame him. And I guess the village will not sue him. The raising of assessments has to be done legally and there ought to be enough brains in the government of Chelsea to know that they cannot enforce the payment of taxes after pursuing the method which was done in Mr. Holmes' case. There will not be any suit."
