WAY CAR AND A BOX CAR

Made a Terrific Blaze last Evening

A REAR END COLLISION

On the Michigan Central-Engineer and Fireman Saved Their Lives By Jumping

As a result of a rear end collision Sunday night on the Michigan Central, a way car and one box car was totally burned, another box car was partially burned and an engineer and fireman escaped most serious Injury only by jumping from the engine.

Michigan Central fast freight was approaching the station from the west with a supposed clear track. But a switch had been turned so that the fast freight smashed into the rear of another freight train.

Engineer Rinshed and his fireman jumped just in time to save their lives. They were taken to the University hospital, but the fireman was found to be uninjured in any way and he shortly left. Engineer Rinshed, however, had fallen in such a way that his eye was injured and it will be two or three days before the doctors will allow him to go. He will not lose his sight of the eye.

In the meantime at the scene of the accident, the stove of the way car had been overturned and the car caught fire. There was no engine immediately available and, although the fire department responded promptly, the blaze could not be reached with hose. The fire spread to a box car containing bales of cotton and the sky was lighted up as if the whole north end of the city was burning.

An immense crowd was attracted to the scene.

Before an engine could be had to separate the burning cars from the remainder of the train, a third caught ablaze, but this was partially saved by hauling it down to the mill, where the fire was extinguished.
