The Biggest Farms Are in Dexter-Smallest Are in Augusta
According to the statistics sent out by Secretary of State Warner there are 3,469 farms in Washtenaw county.
Of these 1,684, or 49 per cent contain sheep and there are 81,336 in the county flock. This is an average 48 to those farmers who own sheep or 23 to each farm in the county.
The statistics for the year ending on Jan. 1. 1901, show that Washtenaw farmers do not think there is much money in wheat. In 1896 there was harvested 51,157 acres of wheat; in 1897, 54,143; in 1898, 59,909; in 1899, 64,494: and in 1900, 48,669 only. Washtenaw ranked 38th in the state in regards to the number of bushels and 79th as regards the average yield per acres. Only Oakland, HillsdaIe and Branch had harder luck on the wheat crop.
In 1901 there were 282,537 acres of improved land and 91,275 acres of unimproved land in the county. This made an average of 108 acres to the farm in the county.
