Washtenaw's Record

Not so Bad as in Many Other Counties, But 122 Cases Were Pending Here in 1901

The number of divorces pending in Washtenaw country Jan. 1, 1901, according to the Michigan Monthly Bulletin just issued, was 51. In St. Clair county there were 207 divorces pending, in Lanawee 105, in Wexford 175, in Wayne 406, etc, so that it may be seen that there is not as much domestic unhappiness here as in many other counties. In the entire state on Jan. 1, 1901, there were 3,857 divorces pending. This is 460 more than pending on Jan. 1, 1900; 898 more than in 1899, and 1,382 more than in 1898, so that it will be seen that the unsettled divorce cases are increasing.

In the year 1901, 71 bills for divorce were filed in Washtenaw county, 46 divorces were granted, 2 were refused, 6 cases were withdrawn, 68 bills were pending Dec. 31, 1901. The total cases in the county court during the year was 122, of which only 17 were contested.

In Michigan during the year 1901, 2,389 divorces were granted and 45 refused. This is an increase in the number of divorces granted of 488 over 1898 and 61 over 1899, but a decrease of 46 over 1900.

The total number of divorce cases pending in the Michigan courts during 1901, was 7,628, an increase of 755 over 1900, 1,080 over 1899 and 2,255 over 18988. The rapid increase in divorces in the state is truly alarming.
