Brooklyn Cyclists Expect to Ride a Mile In Twenty Seconds.

Charley and Billy Murphy of Brooklyn, brothers. who in the days of the high wheel and later, when the safety bicycle came Into use, won championship honors at many distances, are ready to launch out in a fight with a new tandem to obtain a record flesh, blood and steel, says the New York World.

Charley Murphy- "Mile a Minute Murphy" they call him- rode the fastest mile ever covered by anybody from his own exertions. It was behind a locomotive on Long Island that Murphy rode the mile in 57 4-5 seconds to the wonderment of the world. Since then automobiles have flashed over level roads faster than the wind and beyond Murphy's record. Locomotives have shattered their best marks. A new era of space annihilation bas begun.

With the movement to dash against time comes the announcement that the Murphy brothers have built a bicycle locomotive of amazing speed and weight. It has two boilers, two cylinders and is strong enough to pull a train. It is expected to put Fournier's automobile record of 51 4-5 seconds back to a period of transportation in the stone age.

The Murphys maintain that with its boilers able to stand a pressure of 360 pounds each, a double acting engine, with cylinders 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches, and a 3 1/2 inch stroke, equal to 25,000 revolutions a minute, this steam tandem on paper will be able to cover three miles a minute.
