WON'T RESIGN 'TILL SEPTEMBER
Vandawarker will Hold Job Until That Time
HIS ANNOUNCEMENT
Was Made Saturday—Mayor Says He Talked to Newkirk Last Night
City Treasurer George Vandawarker announced Saturday that he would not resign from the office to take up the duties of assistant postmaster to which he was recently appointed, until September 1.
It will be remembered that Judge Newkirk, who was recently offered the city treasurership by the mayor, said the he was not certain whether he would accept the office, and from another source it was learned that judge was not inclined to take up the duties of the position except he could assume them on Jult 1, as the taz collections come in during that month.
With reference to the July collection, Mr. Vandawarker said today that the fall collection this year would be larger than those of last year, because of the State street paving tax.
When the mayor was asked what Judge Newkirk was likely to do in the matter of accepting the appointment now that Mr. Vandawarker had decided not to resign until September 1, he said he did not know. He had a talk with Judge Newkirk last night, he said, but nothing definite was agreed upon.
"Anyhow," continued the mayor, the biggest tax collections are made in the winter and not in July, but really the appointment is yet still open. I don't think anything definite will be done about it until August."
