PRISONER RELEASED FROM JACKSON

CALLED ON MARTIN CAVANAUGH THE ATTORNEY

Young Colored Man Whom the Lawyer Befriended Fervently Expresses His Gratitude

Martin J. Cavanaugh was in his law office Tuesday when the door opened and two colored men walked in. The younger of the two extended his hand to the attorney, saying as he did so: "I've come to thank you, sir, for your great kindness to me."

"Oh, that's all right," said the attorney in his usual good natured way, as he grasped the colored boy's hand. "All I want you to do is to promise me that you will live a straightforward life. I know you will. Make a brave effort and you will come out all right in the end."

The young fellow was visibly affected as he promised Mr. Cavanaugh that he was determined to live rightly hereafter. "I will come and see you often, sir," he said as he turned to leave the office. "I can never forget your goodness to me."

The young colored man was one of a number who had been sentenced to Jackson prison for a long term. Attorney Cavanaugh had faith in his promise to do better and he succeeded after much effort, in getting him released on parole. It was because of this that the young fellow was at the attorney's office Tuesday to express his gratitude and resolve to be a good citizen.
