SCHUMANN PROGRAM AT LADIES UNION

Mrs. Ford Read a Very Interesting Paper.

Tributes Paid to Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton - Club Has Outgrown Its Rooms.

The Ladies' Union met as usual Wednesday afternoon at the Unitarian church. As this was the fifth Wednesday in the month, and no regular program had been planned, the president, Mrs. Pettee, arranged a Schumann program which was a very pleasing change from the regulation program.

The first half hour was devoted to the discussion of current topics by the various members. The death of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, which occurred during the past week, was spoken of, and numerous interesting incidents of her life were told. Other happenings of more or less interest were discussed.

Mrs. Ford read a very bright and interesting paper on Schumann's life, which was listened to with great intentness by her hearers. She told of the struggle which this man of artistic temperament had in early life to convince his mother and guardian of his unfitness for any but a musical career. After several months spent in the study of law his guardians became convinced of his uselessness in that work and consented to his devoting his life to the study of music. She told of his successes in his chosen profession and of life as lover, husband, and father. It was a most interesting history of his life, showing his peculiar characteristics and both his strong and weak points.

Several letters which threw further light upon the peculiarities of this man were read by Mrs. Guthe.

A social cup of tea was enjoyed by the club members and their friends at the conclusion of the program. The attendance has grown to be so large during the past few weeks that it has outgrown the rooms in which the meetings been held in the church audience room and will afford ample room for every one.
