SLEPT ON A CLEAN COUNTERPANE

TRIED TO BLUFF MRS. NEWMAN THAT HE WAS LAME

Patrick King and Robert Stanton surreptitiously gained admission to Mrs. Newman's boarding house Saturday and made themselves at home in one of the best rooms. They were evidently anxious for the "honey heavy dew of slumber" for they went to bed without removing the counter-pane. When Mrs. Newman found them they were enjoying a very comfortable rest, Pat holding fast to a pair of crutches and pretending that he was lame. After Mrs. Newman had given him a good scolding for thus soiling her linen Pat suddenly discarded his crutches and stepped about lively enough. Pat was full of bluff and said to Mrs. Newman: "You better look out, I am a desperate man."

"I am a desperate woman too," said his captor and made her exit with the door locked on the outside. Pat and his mate had no difficulty in getting over to the jail. When brought up before Justice Doty Monday they argued persuasively for an easy sentence, but the charge of drunkenness in a public place did not permit anything less than 30 days each in the county jail.
