Sophomore Engineer Drowned at Sterling, Ill.

Parents' Only Son

Was Camping and Started to Wade Across River - Slipped Into Hole - Was Well Known and Popular

News was received in the city, Tuesday, of the death by drowning of Edward Randall, a prominent member of the sophomore engineering class of the U. of M.

From the letter it appears that Mr. Randall, with a party of friends, was out camping near his home at Sterling, Ill., and Saturday afternoon started to wade across the river.  When partially across he stepped, or slipped, into a hole and realizing that he was sinking called for help.  Those on the shore started to give assistance, but before they could reach him he had gone down and did not come up again.  The body was recovered that evening.

Mr. Randall was an only son and was about 22 years of age.  During his stay here he roomed with Mrs. Fred Barker, 503 Elm street, and she received a letter from him Saturday morning making arrangements for occupying the same quarters next year.  He was a very fine young man, a prominent member of the Students' Christian association and a hardworking and conscientious student.

The news of his untimely death will be a shock to all who knew him and his parents will have their heartfelt sympathy in the sad bereavement.
