A TAME COUNCIL MEETING MONDAY

CONSIDERED PETITION AS TO ALLEGED SMOKE NUISANCE

Committee on Entertainment for Meeting of League of Mich. Municipalities

Al the council meeting Monday a petition was received asking that the city take steps to abate the alleged nuisance caused by the coal smoke from the Groves building on State and Liberty streets. The petitioners stated that an inferior grade of soft coal Is used in this building and that the smokestack is too low, a combination which makes the situation very disagreeable for the neighborhood. They requested that the occupants of the building be either directed to stop using soft coal or that they be obliged to erect a higher chimney and provide it with some means of rendering the smoke less disagreeable. They petition was referred to the city attorney.

As a committee to arrange for the entertainment of the delegates to the convention of the League of Municipalities to be held in this city, Pres. Walz named Ald. Douglas, Coon and Schlenker.

On motion the board of public works was directed to have its annual report ready by the first council meeting in January.

Ald. Kearns moved that Lennane Bros. be paid the 5 per cent of the contract price of the State street paving that has been held up for the past year. The motion was lost, but the question was later reconsidered, when it was voted to pay the 5 per cent.

Ald. Coon stated that he wished to offer another resolution to frame an ordinance creating the office of milk inspector, but Ald. Robinson, a member of the committee, stated that he and his colleagues considered the proposed ordinance at their last meeting, and that they will give the matter farther attention.

Pres. Walz. appointed Ald. Coon, Hutzel and Schlenker a committee to investigate the accident to the boiler in the city building.
