To-day gold and silver are on an equal foot'me in thtl country. Producing both metal?, it is rightlhatboth sliould be used for rnoney by us, ns well as tliat tliey should stand side by side. To effect tliis latter result the governmcnt bas occationally to change tbe legal or colning ratio. For, If one inetal gets cheap tbe old law operates In drivlng out the otlier. A fierce controversy on tbe silver question bas been going on In Congress between two classes of theorists, tbe one claiming thut we sbould have a free coiuage or all silver wbicli mlght be preeented at tbe mint, tbe otber tbat the montbly coinage sbould be liinited. Nearly all agree tbat with our rapldly increasing population and business, our volume of currency migbt well be enlarged witbout danger to trade; but ratber to ita advantage. Especially because tbe calling in of national bank notes tends to a considerable contraction of tbe currency. Tbe Senate bas passed a bilí for free coinage, telling every one who has $100 worth o f silver bullion that be can go to the goyernment mint and get f130 for it. Wbeu such a field for speculalion sbould be opened to the world nothing wou!d prevent an inllow from every otber country wbicli would, at fírst, make an enorïnous intlation of our currency, Uien a migbtypanlc. Silver wou'd become plenty consequently cheap. Tben gold would obtain a premium, be hoarded and quit circulating. This wouid entail great loss on every bank depositor, to be paid off in a clieaper currency tlian he put in the bank; on every pensioner, who received money wliose purchasing power liad depreciatcd 25 per cent.; on every man unïler a frold mortgage (as uiany are out west) who must pay principal and interest in gold at a premium. To-day a silver dollar or a silver certifícate is is good as gold, but we would dread a liroitless avalancue of silver Houding the country. It seenis that the position of the House 8 the correct one. They propose to pass a bilí for the purcliase of $4,500,000 worth of silver bullioa every iiiniith, and the issue of notes for its gold value. This would put into circulation sixty milllons of dollars a year, which, it would sci'in, would be all that it is safe to do. It would take the silver production of onr own land. Wöy should we be called upon to help mine owners or speculators of other countries in dumping all Iheir silver upon us? Let the yellow and white metáis stand toüetl.er as money. Let us have more money in circnlatlon, hut not an unknown avalanche. It is too dangerous to experiment with moiicy, for that efft-cts everything. No matter what prlceo of goods are now n.s comparecí wllh otlier years. Wimt the American farmer wants the protectloDiat to i'xplalu Is, why an Advance plow made In Aun Arbor retalla to a Spanlurd for Jsi, whlle to an Amencau farmer for $18; or why a lirltlsh workman sliould get :ti pounds of American granulateü sugar for a dollar, wblle llie Amerlcau farmer gels but ll.-Adriun Press. In tlie ilrst place an Advance plow made in Arm Arbor coets the Spaniard the same as an American. There is only one price at tlie factory, hikI tliere is where the tarifl' would effect the pnce if anywhere. If retail dealers in Adrián are so greedy as not to be contented with a fair prolit it should not be cbargeable to the taiifl', should it ? As to the sugar. The assertion of tïie Press will btsr investlgation befoie it is too thorotighly belleved. ]5ut what the rcpublicnD party lias contended for, and what the democratie party has steudlly foucthtagainst is the retnoval of the duty on sugar. There is comparatively little sugar produced in tliis country, and the tariff has exlsted loni enough to prove that it can never be produced hereto any great extent, and po the duty should be removed, for in tliat case it amounts to a tax. Remove the duty on sugar as the republican party advocate?, and jou will be all right.
