Tlie Florentine statues, the "Neapolitan Musicians," a boy and girl represented in sitting posture, in Goodyear's window, are certuinly the finest thlngs of the kind ever seen in Ann Arbor. It will pay a person to walk a long ways to see thein. The Saline Observer pays this liigh compliment to Ann Arbor's crack orchestra : " Seldom are our people favored with a musical Ireat equal to that furnished by the Cliequamegon orchestra, of Ann Arbor, at commencement exercises, last week." The next meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science 3 to be held at Indianapolis, Ind., beginnlng on Tuesday, Aug. 19. Prof. M. E. Ménage, of Minneapolis, the gentlemen who senda Frank Bournesand Dean C. Worcester to the Plfilippine Islands for a two year's trip, has been in the city thls week making arrangements. Messrs. Bournes and Worcester expect to leave here next week, and sail Aug. 7th from SinFrancisco. Saturduy night as a freight train was passing through the M. C. yards at this station, the conductor stopped the train and reported a man lying on the track at the east en trance to the yartls. Kd. Perry went down to investígate, and found a man lyinj; upan the side track dead - drunk. He was got up and hnstled out of the way before any more trains came along. The Ann Arbor High School nine went to Jackson July 4th and were beaten in two games by the Jackson Mutuals. Tlie morning game resul ted in 5 runs, 7 base hits and 7 errors for the H. S., and 0 runs, 3 base bits and 6 errors for the Mutuals. Tlie afternoon game: 7 r., 7 b. h., 6 e. for the H. S , and 1 1 r. 4 b. h., 0 e. for the Mutual?. B. Frank Bower, who ba9 been mantgtugeditorof the Detroit Journal for soine time, has resigned bis position to tuko charge of the World, a new penny paper at Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Bower is one of the former Ann Arbor boys of wuom the city isjuatly proud. Teachers desiring to be exanilned for state certificates, as provlded by section 15 of the public acts of 1889, are informed that an examination will be held at Buy View, commencing at 2 o'clock, p. m., Monday, August 11, and continuing for five days. Ann Arbor people elther stayed at home and enjoyed the time in peace, or else tbey bied themselves to Dexter, Saline, or the Lake to enjoy the day. The city was very quiet, thouuli the smail boy and the inevitable lire cracker were companions to a considerable extent. In the evening there were soine quite pretty displays of flre works by private parties.
