"The Press," of New York, Sunday, July 13tb, in speakini; of different persons who my be presidential candidates in 1892 devotes four columns to a review of Gen. Alger's career. We quote a single paragraph: "The sketch giren of General Alger's life of itself suggetts the qualifications which in the minus of hls friends give liim avallabilRy as a preaidciitial candidate. It shows hlm as the bard working and self rellant youth, the brave soldier, the gullant officer, the successful business man, the broad mlnded philanthropist, the discreet and patriotic statesman, and the loving, devoted husband and fathcr. His career Is one that nuturally commands respect and arouses enthusiasui. He has attained distinction in each line of his life's work. He has a very large acquaintance among business men, and posesses their confidence. His military Pareer and his service In the G. A. R. liave made him well knownto the soldier element, witii whom he is exeeedingly popular, li Is energy and his progressive spirit challenge the ailmiration of all classes, and he has aroused but few antagonisms to weaken him elther in the convention or at the polls. Above all, he lias led a clean and honorable life In private, in business, in the army and in politics. He hasconducted hls campaigns openly, and has never fallen hito the practice, altogether too common, of )Undering or disparaging the merits of his antagonista in the opposite party, or rival in his own party."
