In one of hlscharacteristicprodiictioas, Mr. P. G. Suekey (Iemands the retraction of the term "Anarchist" wblch lie claims was rccently applied to blm in these columns. Tliis we decline to do. For once wc proposc to soberly answer his letter- a course whicli it will seldom be worth our while to take. Webster defines "an anarchist" as "one who promotes disorder In a state." Tliis you have attempted to do and in a measure have done, duriniryour entirc snjourn here. There hid been perfect haruiony here between Americans and Germana until your advent, since wliich time a few of the more ignornnt have been worked up to a feeling of race hatred. With the intelligent Germans you accomplish uothiug, for with these your rantings cause one effect only, vla: openly expre&ied disgust. Your flrst exploit was a scurrilous attack upon Ann Arbor's most honored and respected citizen, Judge Cooley. Another famous exploit was the turnlng loose upon Moody the evangelist ofyourflow of bile. Here is a man who has harmed not the least of living creatures. He lias on the contrary lifted many a joyless lift into one of hope and many a forlorn home has been blessed because its inmates had followed his counscls. His style does not quite meet your aristocratie views; a column of sneers is therefore meted out tohim. The Detroit charity whicli turncd thousand of dollars into the homes of its ncedy ones and at the same time gratilkd the loveofthebeautifulof a host of Michigan citlzens, mects from you words of dension only. You mock at our courts. The worst criticism which can be made in reference to them is that thcy are too often cursed with ignorant juries, soinetiuu'S witli the anomaly of jurors who cannot speak the language of the country. This defect has been seen by those, who Instead of heaping ridicule upon the courts, propose h remedy which lies in providing education for the young of tliis generation, to the end that the jurors of the next can speak the American language and can intelligently discharge their dutles as jurors. In the state of Wlsconsin ibis was provided for by the Bennett law. This, we supposed would meet the approval of any candid man. You, however, are of those who have just assisted in overturning that law and with it the schools of that state, a result wliich many Democrats of our own city are already deploring. You sneer at our churches. You scoff at the learning of our men of science and of literature. You bellttle the University on all occasions. A recent paper read in the city was entitled, "A Germán gymnasium compared with a Michigan high school." Of such topics you do not treat. Do you ever propose anything which will be helpful to anybody ? Your forteis to deride - to make ill teeling - "to promote disorder in the state." In other words toexhibit all the rancorand venomousness of which an ideal anarchist coukl be guilty. You can approve of things unamerican only. Opposition to the rule of Tamraany Hall made Grover Cleveland leader of his'party. The rule of Jacobs in Detroit has no place in the hearts of Michigan democrats. Both seetn to be accoptable to you because they are essentially unamerican. You will soon cali the people of New Orleans "knowiiothlnsts" because they object to the landing of any more of your real compatriots, the Dagos, who have recently killed the Chief of Pólice and threatened the Mayor and other officials of that city. We take the following from a current periodical as the statement of a NewYorker: "The other day I happened to be in court when the judge was examininir a scaly lot of organgrlnders previous to naturallzing them. The flrst was an Italian (another countryman ofyours) all garlic and earrlng8, and the lirst question asked was, "What gort of a government is ttalgf" "Georga Washa, Georga Washa," the tellow answered like a parrot. But the iudge pressed the (inestion, and on being prompted in the rear, the man rallied up with, "si, si, republicana." "Who makes the laws?'' whs the next question, and again the answer was "Georga Washa." But after repeated coaching, Sljrnor Garibaldi Informedthe court that 'de peep" make the laws and was then admitted to to be one of us - an American citizen." Such proceedingsyou pasa by in silence. Your course indicates a tacic approval of them. Sbould it be recommended in any quarter, that somellmitations shoiild take place in admitting such an alien to the right of suffrage, you cry "knownothingism" and "war being made on the foreign bom." This is the spirit you took to Wisconsin. You there made twenty speeches to help down the Bennett school law and "the little schoolhouse on the hill." The Bennett law had placed 5,000 chlldren in private schools and 15,000 in the public schools. The remaining 20,000 who are out of school would soon have been slmilarly placed to be trained up as citizens capable of using the language of the land and as citizens woithy of the republic. Inasmuch as you have made the statement openly that your children should never attend the public schools, your dstructive attitude savors of one thing only - the rankest kind of anarchism. Is there anything n the whole broad land that does really suit you ? If not, would it not be wlser for you to go where you c.iti li ivo f ulier swecp f We would suggeft a retdenoe for you not imonj; Germ ins. Yonr love fur tliem is all liypocrUy.
