Thp vote is a light one excptin the cities, wfaere tlie heavy demrxjratic majorities are. This result is gratifying as showing oenclusively that Michigan has recovered irom her severe attack of political 'Esanity, and in her sober senses is snrely republican. The demócrata iu the legislatura have ipassed a bilí which provides for the lection of presidential electora by conRrcssional districts. The bill is clearly nconstitutional, and a thing never contenaplated by the founders of this gov-ernment, or framers of its laws. It is for the people of the states as states to ■choose the president, and it never was intended to allow to gerrymandered ■congressional districts this power. It is a dangerous departure f rom constitutional rights, and the democratie party by dopting it in this state (the only state in the Union that has attempted such a disgraceful thing) will certainly raap a whirlwind of disaster for its dishonesUr. Nearly all good people of the nation, regardless of politics, will rejoice over the election of Hempstead Washburne, the regular repubhean candidate for mayor of Chicago, over Creiger, the nandidate of the gamblers and bumaners.
