A u'reat stir has been caused in the Protestant Episcopal churcb by the public protest, which lias been Bigned by nearly all the leading episcopal ministera in New York, and in which tliey protest against the action of Heber Newton in allowing speakers of other denominations to occupy bis pulpit at varióos times. The protest has been presented to Bishop Potter, and liis action is awaited with greal interest. lr. Newton is perhaps the best known clergyman in New York, lie was bom in Philadelphia, October 31, 1S40, was graduated trom l'eiinsylvania University and was ordained before he was twenty yeara old. He bas been a prolific writer and bis works in order of time, 1862-1890, clearly show a steady change in bis theology. He is now a latitudinarian, and maiutains that the bible contains the "word of God and much more."' In 1883 he preached several sermona on this subject, which brought on him ecclestical censure and a church trial. Since that date bis position, to the secular eye, is not far trom that of the Germán Kationalists. The The wonder is that he has not a long time ago severed bis ponnection with the Episcopal church. Dr. Newton is always leading in any movement having for its object the purification of local irovernment in New York, and waslately chairman of the citizen's committee.
