One of the most eerious accidenta that ever happened at the Chemical laboratory of the UnAversity, occurred Tuesday, reeultíng in rendering blind tor lifc, Prof. Edward A. Campbell. The ïoUowinig account of the acciiclent is taken trom the Tribune: It appeared that Mr. Campbell had 'been engagcd in a difficult land dangerous experiment. He was m&asuring the amount of hydrogen there was ín the gas produced h-om the combustión of steel by mearas of an aeid. It Is a part of the experiment to draw the hydrogen witli the other gases throug-h . preparatiom of Bpongy palJadium. In the prooess the palladium ■became red hot, and the oxygen and hydrogen united and the explosión occurred. At the time of the explosión, Mr. Campbell had just stooped lown to giiance closely at one of the large bottles on the table, and refceived the full force of the explosión as if it were a blow dtrectly in nis eyes. He staggered back, clasped his bands to his eyes, reeled and exclaimfed, "I am blind !" While Dr. Flemtoing Carrow was ïiicking the glass trom his eyes the stiidents and professors gathered on the out.side of the building waiting for the verdict of the doctor's upon the young sciientist's fate. "VVhen it was nt Jength a.nnounced that he would lose both his eyes, the news produced ia profound impression. It would not have made so deep an impression if it ihad been announced that he was idead. Professor Campbell was taken to the UñTversáty Hospital, where lus right eye was entirely removed. "Teil me the worst, doctor," he feaid. The doctor explained to him that !ie had lost irrevocably both eyes. "Thsa kill me," he exclaimed, and threw 'himeelf back in his bed in destair. Professor -Campbell is a son of the late Judge J. V. Campbell, of Detroit. He is a young ma.n, an ambitious scholar and the father of two little thildren. At a late hour this eveníng Mrs. Campbell had íiot been inïöi-mtd of the extent of the injury .to lier husband. President Angelí this cvcnhi"' telegraiphed the news to Detroit. Thils is the iirst serious accident in the University laboratory in ïi long time. Professor Campbell in performrag a similar experiment last week had a nimilar, thougli slight explosión. Hugh Vandeventer, n student ivho was standing beside the experiinenter at the time of the exiploeion, eecaped with a slight in■jury.
