Appleton & Co. t contains Carlyle's only novel, "Wot:en Heinfred," which was left among lis papers. According to Froude and x-slie Stephen, some characters in ;his novel -were drawn from Coleridge, :rving, Thackery and other of Caryle's contemporaries. The book also ontains another unpublished manutript, entitled "Excursión (Futile Enougli) to Paris," a characteristic escription of a journey with the ?rownings and a vlsit to Lord Ashurton. There is also a collection of npublished letters from Carlyle desribiiiR the preparation of his Frederck the Great, and there are several etters from Mrs. Carlyle. This imortant addition to Carlyle's works s the first of liis books to have au merican copyright.
