Do Hot cultívate so deep as to disturb the roots. An effective remedy for black knot is cuttiug off and burning. It is not too late to set out strawberry plants if good care is given. Many make a mistake in failing to spread out the roots evenly. Remove the mulch and give the strawberries thorough cultivation. Keeping the soil sliaded aids materially in the storing of nitrogen. Transplanting t wo or three times helps in the formation of fibrous roots. Generally in transplanting it is best to set the plants down to the first leaf. In growing berries for inarket, the best results are secured with a rich soil. Allowing them to grow too thick is one cause of failure in growing root crops. Mulchmt! newly set trees during hot, dry weather often saves them from dyiug. During the summer is a good time to prepare "the soil for fall planting of the orchard. Many plants die because care is not taken to place the soil in close contact with the roots. It is rarely a good plan to allow a fruit tree agent to select the varieties of trees Eor the orchard. The grape can be readily propagated by layeríng and a good supply of planta be secured at a low cost. Allowiug moss or lichen togrow to the bark of tho trees affords a hiding or harboring place for vermin. Better sow the vacant places in the garden to turnips or rutabagas, ratlier than allow them to grow ap in weeds. Old stniw is one of the best materials that can be used for mulcbing. Bagaese is also good when it can be secured conveniently. Keep down the raspberry canes ; four or five good canes to every four feet of row will give a better qualitv of fruit than it thicker.-
